Hovhannes Tumanyan was born in the village Dsegh, Lori, on February 19, 1869. At first he studied at the village school in Dsegh and then he continued his studies at a school in Jalaloghly (now Stepanavan). He moved to Tiflis in 1883 where he studied at Tiflis Nersisyan School in 1883-1887. Tumanyan worked for the local newspapers and periodicals “Աղբյուր- Spring”, “Մուրճ-Hammer”, “Հորիզոն-Horizon”. In 1899 The literary Group Vernatun was established by Tumanyan. The members of Vernatun were Avetik Isahakyan, Derenik Demirchyan, Levon Shant, Ghazaros Aghayan, Perch Proshyan, Nikol Aghbalyan and others. In the autumn of 1921 Tumanyan left for Constantinople to find help for Armenian emigrants. He was already ill when he returned from Turkey after a few months. Tumanyan died at the age of 54 on the 23rd of March, in 1923. Tumanyan wrote tales “The Liar”, “The Smart and the Fool”, “Anban Hury”, “The Brother Ax” and so on. He also wrote short stories “Gikor”, “The Wolf”, poems “Anush”, “Sako of Lori”, “Maro”, and quatrains.
